Our story from a lockdown idea
Hi I’m Vicky.
I trained and worked as a hairdresser for eighteen years but stopped to have children (two girls).
Fast forward 10 years and add a pandemic to the mix, I decided it was time I got a job. But what? I wanted to make something and be creative.
While at home attempting to home school the children during the autumn 2020 lockdown I found time to lose myself in YouTube. That’s when I discovered the art of resin and wood turning. Could this be something I could learn and make into a new business? I saw there was a gap in the market, turning resin and adding smart lights to change the look of the resin at night, while retaining beautiful burl wood during the day.
From this idea and with the support of my husband came many, many hours of research on electronics and apps to see if it was doable.
Turning was the biggest challenge, due to Covid-19 I couldn’t try it out first as all training was stopped. This is when we had to just take the chance it would be something I could do. We bought a lathe and all the other machinery needed to cut the wood and mould the resin without the dreaded air bubbles!
We also had the garage converted in to a warm and cozy workshop. Spoilt I know! After many hours experimenting with all the new tools and machinery, designing the bases and electronics holder using a 3D printer, I produced my first of many dragon egg lamps.
Time to turn my dining room table from home school to a soldering station! One corner of my dining room became a photo studio, the other the packing department. It was a success!
All my lamps are lovingly made in my workshop and dining room in Somerset, UK.
