Purple whispy ball like egg
The naughty sphere egg! When you have a piece on the lather spinning at over 2000rpm knowing when to stop is critical. So very true with this sphere egg.
That last chisel stroke sent this near perfect sphere flying off the lathe straight into my face. From there it continued to fly across the room to meet with the back wall of the workshop. Finally, gravity got hold of the sphere, making its way rolling across the workshop floor to greet my feet.
Slightly in shock I took a little step back to pull myself together, being extra grateful hubby got me a full-face guard meant no damage to me but what about my perfect sphere? On picking it up I could see there was a massive chunk out of one side. You know that look when you dropped your marbles at school, and they chip. I try and put it back on the lathe to see if I could turn it out, but the damage was too deep.
Not one to give up I decided to get my sander out and re-shape it into something else. Two days later after lots of sanding and polishing an egg was made.
At this point I could have robbed a bank and not had to worry about leaving fingerprints! ‘Never give up on anything!’
I used the same piece of burl wood for the base and the wood.
The base is made from burl wood.
The sizes are approx. sphere:- 9cm diameter, base:- 15-17cm depth, 10 cm wide and 9-10cm high.
